In Malaysia, the first official Teachers’ Day was celebrated on May 16, 1956. This date commemorates the endorsement of the Razak Report, a pivotal document that shaped the Malaysian education system.
Here’s why May 16 is significant:
-
Razak Report:On May 16, 1956, the Federal Legislative Council of the Federation of Malaya officially endorsed the Razak Report, a report on education that later formed the foundation of the Malaysian education system.
-
National Education Policy:The Razak Report, named after Tun Abdul Razak Hussein (then Education Minister), is considered the National Education Policy of Malaysia.
-
Endorsement of Malay as National Language:The report also recommended the adoption of Malay as the national language, with all students required to study it.
Therefore, Teachers’ Day in Malaysia is not just a day to appreciate educators, but also a recognition of the historical and ongoing importance of education in nation-building.
This year theme – “Guru Tunjang Sekolah Sejahtera” is a befitting recognition for the country’s educators. In doing so, the Education Ministry has also emphasised an important thing: teachers do not just impart knowledge, but build character too.
Thank you Teachers !
